Popis

Tliltocatl schroederi

Tliltocatl schroederi (formerly known as Brachypelma schroederi) originates from the valleys and drier regions around Acapulco, Mexico. Unlike its brightly colored relatives in the same genus, it features an elegant, solid dark coloration. Thanks to its calm and docile nature, as well as its hardiness, it is an excellent and highly valued species in the hobby, perfectly suited for beginners.

Basic parameters:

  • Scientific name: Tliltocatl schroederi
  • Origin: Central America (MexicoGuerrero state)
  • Size: Medium-sized species, reaching a leg span of 1215 cm (4.56 inches) in adulthood.
  • Lifespan: Females easily live 20+ years; males live 35 years post-maturity.
  • Temperament: Very calm and docile, although slings and juveniles can sometimes be a bit skittish.
  • Type: Terrestrial (New World, possesses urticating hairs).

and care:

Appearance: The entire body is a solid dark brown to velvety black, lacking any light stripes or red hairs, making it visually very similar to the popular Grammostola pulchra.

Terrarium:

  • Dimensions: A 30x30x30 cm or 40x30x30 cm (12x12x12 or 16x12x12 inches) enclosure is fully sufficient for an adult female.
  • Equipment: Provide a deeper layer of dry to slightly moist substrate (810 cm / 34 inches) as they like to burrow and rearrange their surroundings. A piece of cork bark for a hide and a shallow water dish are mandatory.
  • Ventilation: Standard cross-ventilation is sufficient.

Temperature and humidity:

  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 2428 °C (7582 °F) with a slight nighttime drop.
  • Humidity: Lower to moderate, around 6070%. The substrate should be kept mostly dry, occasionally overflowing the water dish or misting one corner.

Feeding and diet: They are generally great eaters that willingly accept appropriately sized feeder insects (crickets, roaches, locusts). They grow slightly faster and eat more reliably than Grammostola species.

Venom and safety:

  • Venom: Very mild and completely harmless to a healthy human, comparable to a bee sting.
  • Defense: They do not act defensively, and bites are extremely rare; if disturbed, they prefer to retreat to their hide or, as a last resort, kick urticating hairs from their abdomen.
