Popis

Tliltocatl albopilosus (Nicaragua)

Tliltocatl albopilosus (formerly known as Brachypelma albopilosum) in the specific „Nicaragua“ form originates from Central America. In the hobby, this particular locale is highly prized because, compared to the commonly kept and historically hybridized „Honduras“ form, it boasts much longer, denser, and more vibrantly colored setae. It is one of the calmest and hardiest species available.

Basic parameters:

  • Scientific name: Tliltocatl albopilosus (Nicaragua form)
  • Origin: Central America (Nicaragua)
  • Size: Medium to large species, reaching a leg span of 1416 cm (5.56.5 inches).
  • Lifespan: Females live 1520 years; males live 35 years post-maturity.
  • Temperament: Extremely calm and docile. A perfect choice for beginners.
  • Type: Terrestrial (New World, possesses urticating hairs).

and care:

Appearance: The dark brown to black base color of the body is densely covered in extremely long, characteristically curled setae. In the pure Nicaragua form, these hairs have a stunning, vibrant golden to bronze hue, giving the spider a very „fluffy“ appearance.

Terrarium:

  • Dimensions: A 30x30x30 cm or 40x30x30 cm (12x12x12 or 16x12x12 inches) enclosure is optimal for an adult female.
  • Equipment: Provide a deeper layer of substrate (810 cm / 34 inches) as they are avid burrowers, especially as juveniles. A piece of cork bark for a hide and a shallow water dish are required.
  • Ventilation: Standard cross-ventilation is sufficient.

Temperature and humidity:

  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures range between 2428 °C (7582 °F) with a slight nighttime drop.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity, around 6575%. The lower layers of the substrate should be slightly moist, while the top layer can remain somewhat dry.

Feeding and diet: They are famously great eaters. They readily take appropriately sized feeder insects (crickets, roaches, locusts) and grow at a steady rate.

Venom and safety:

  • Venom: Very mild and harmless to humans, comparable to a bee sting.
  • Defense: They are incredibly phlegmatic. Bites are almost unheard of, and even the kicking of urticating hairs is relatively rare for this species.
