Popis
Tliltocatl epicureanum
A lesser-known but very attractive terrestrial tarantula from Mexico, formerly placed in the genus Brachypelma (as Brachypelma epicureanum). It is visually very similar to its more popular relative, Tliltocatl vagans. Originating from the Yucatan Peninsula, it inhabits dry forests and scrublands where it digs deep burrows. This is a very hardy, low-maintenance New World spider whose mild temperament makes it a perfect choice for beginners.
Basic parameters:
- Scientific name: Tliltocatl epicureanum
- Common name: Yucatan Rust Rump Tarantula
- Origin: Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula)
- Size: Medium to large terrestrial species. Body 56 cm, leg span approx. 1214 cm.
- Lifespan: Females are long-lived (1520+ years), males live a shorter time (approx. 45 years).
- Temperament: Docile, but can sometimes be slightly skittish. It is not aggressive, though it is quite prone to kicking urticating hairs when disturbed.
- Type: Terrestrial (New World)
and care:
Appearance: The carapace is dark, sometimes with a subtle lighter border. The rest of the body and legs are a velvety dark brown to black. The abdomen is densely covered with longer rust-colored to dark red hairs, which might be slightly less contrasting and vibrant than those of T. vagans.
Terrarium: A standard terrestrial terrarium where floor space is more important than height.
- Dimensions: A terrarium of 30x30x20 cm or 30x30x30 cm is ideal for an adult.
- Equipment: The spider appreciates a deeper layer of substrate (approx. 710 cm of peat or coco coir mixed with sand), as it loves to dig and rearrange its surroundings. A hide (e.g., half a cork bark tube or a coconut shell) and a shallow water dish are essential.
- Ventilation: Standard cross-ventilation to ensure good airflow.
Temperature and humidity:
- Temperature: 2428 °C during the day, with a natural slight drop at night.
- Humidity: 6070%. This species does not require high humidity. It is entirely sufficient to keep a clean water dish in the terrarium and lightly moisten about one-third of the substrate (ideally near the dish) once every week or two, while keeping the rest of the enclosure dry.
Feeding and diet: It is a very reliable and eager eater. The staple diet consists of crickets, roaches, and locusts. Spiderlings grow quickly and have a great appetite.
Venom and safety:
- Venom: Very mild. As a New World species, its bite is not medically significant to humans (comparable to a bee or wasp sting).
- Defense: Its primary defense strategy is kicking urticating hairs from its abdomen. These hairs can cause an unpleasant itching and redness of the skin.
